Focus

If you’re happy and you know it, um … ride your Focus bike! And it gets even better if you’re riding in a group. It is this simple idea that sparked the vision that makes every Focus bike special. Focus MTBs, gravel bikes and road bikes are developed and tested in Stuttgart and built in Emstek near Cloppenburg. "Made in Germany" in every respect, in other words. But how did this geographical shift between northern Germany and the far south come about? And are Focus bikes really so good that they make all cyclists sing? Let's do the check ...

Things to know about Focus Bikes

How did the success story of Focus Bikes take off? If you want to know more about that, you'll have to dig elsewhere first. After all, Focus Bikes can rely on a long-standing tradition, but the bike brand based in Stuttgart, Germany, itself isn't entirely responsible for that. The Focus company policy shows: Not only riding a bike is more fun when done in a team, obviously this also applies to building bikes!

Focus bikes is group effort brought to perfection

The company began shaking up the MTB market from its headquarters in Stuttgart in 1993 and has more than 100 years of experience. Now you probably wonder whether we've lost count. No, the numbers are right. A few years after its founding, Focus Bikes was taken over by DerbyCycle, making it the premium brand of the German bicycle veteran Kalkhoff, a company that has been building bicycles since 1919. Kalkhoff was famous as a producer of comfortable leisure bikes, Focus was intended to represent the premium performace range. Ever since the production site of both brands is based in the in the shared manufacturing plant in Emstek. So you can be sure that the fresh ideas of Focus Bikes meet Kalkhoff's experience and know-how of more than 100 years of bike building.

After some shuffling back and forth, Focus Bikes is currently part of the FOCUS & KALKHOFF Holding, which in turn is part of the Dutch Pon Holding. Pon is known for taking outstanding bike brands under its wing. Apart from Focus, the popular US manufacturer Cannondale or the well-known MTB brand Santa Cruz belong to the Pon group. Together with many other brands, Focus Bike is therefore part of the largest bicycle manufacturer in Europe. The Pon Group delivered a whopping 710,000 bikes in 2021, 60% of which were e-bikes.

Where are Focus bikes actually manufactured?

Focus bikes are designed at the company's headquarters in Stuttgart and assembled in Emstek in northern Germany. But almost more important than the locations of offices and production are brand's the test tracks. Designers and developers like to hit MTB trails around Stuttgart for their test laps. Company teams push themselves and Focus road bikes to the limit at local races. Employees test ride Focus Gravel Bikes on bikepacking tours all over Europe.

Focus Bikes has a master plan…

The idea behind each new bike development is simple: The riding experience on a Focus bike should wow you so much that you never want to get off again. It is meant to make you want to push your limits. And it's about getting as many people on bikes as possible - and join their efforts on group rides. Therefore, the company motto is:

Ride together. Ride beyond.

In the early years, Focus only produced mountain bikes, but after a few years the range was expanded to include touring bikes. Today road bikes and gravel bikes have joined the range of hardtails and fullys. Of course the bikes are also available in electric versions. As is the case all over the place, Focus full suspension eMTBs and eHardtails take up an ever-increasing share of the range. There are also an electric touring bike and a motorized leisure bike for the city, but otherwise Focus likes to focus on athletic performance bicycles.

Focus bikes impress with top quality

Our guess is that once you've experienced how a first-class, perfectly tuned synthesis of chassis, suspension, geometry (and, if available, electric drive) feels, you'll never want to ride another bike ever again. Focus makes sure that all its bikes meet the highest requirements by setting high development standards, performing thorough quality checks and running masses of test rides. The meticulous development efforts and the extensive testing procedures, that often far exceed the mandatory safety regulations, pay off - proof of this are the victories in field and product tests and several design awards.

Focus mountain bikes and e-MTBs

Focus bikes's success story began with mountain bikes, and off-road bikes still occupy a central part of the bike portfolio today. For the 2023 season, you can buy Focus hardtails and fully suspended MTBs in regular and electric bike versions. Here's a quick overview of the current Focus range of MTBs.

Focus Hardtails and E-Hardtails

Focus has two different hardtails to offer in 2023. Its snippy carbon base makes the race hardtail Raven an excellent option for tough off-road action. All-rounder Whistler is a great combination of a everyday transport and off-road qualities, as it brings a moderately sporty frame geometry what allows a good overview and mounting points for mudguards and a rear rack.

All-rounder Jarifa is Focus's 2023 electric hardtail mountain bike, with a geometry that is rather relaxed than super low, there is also plenty of battery and torque capacity for long tours and the option to upgrade to full equipment.

Focus Fullys and electric MTBs with full suspension

Jam and Throne are the names that make MTB fans' eyes light up; the two Focus flagship MTBs have already appeared in various editions and are absolutely cult-worthy. Both, Thron the trail and touring bike and Jam, the AllMountain with full suspension, are available as eBikes or regular bikes. All of Focus's MTBs are powered by Bosch engines, that are famous for their power, durability and long ranges.

Focus road bike and gravel bike

Do you want to go devilishly fast or do you prefer to go anywhere? Focus's dropar lineup offers both! Just your ol' road bike is not on the list, tho. With Izalco Max you get a carbon aero racer that could probably require a brake chute in the saddlebag. Things don't get quite as racy on Atlas. This gravel bike offers just about everything gravel fans could wish for: A perfect mix of off-road capability, enough comfort for long bikepacking tours and lots of dropbar fun. Plus, if desired, there are models outfitted with all the everyday equipment right from the box.
