After over two years of development, the Maxxis Assegai is finally here! Greg Minnaar's signature tire is the essence of his 30 years of racing experience and Maxxis' expert knowledge of over 50 years of tire production.
"My idea was to design a tire from the best Maxxis treads. I started in the middle with a combination of Minion DHF and Minion DHR II. The reason was that the DHF's surface rolls well and holds super on hardpack, in greasy corners, and on wet roots and rocks. The DHR II rolls much better and can brake more aggressively.
Then I set to work on an 'extra' lug that gives you more support and a consistent feel when you put the bike into the corner on the outside lugs. That brings us to my favorite tire - the HighRoller. Maxxis engineers and I reshaped the HighRoller side lug to have pretty much the same characteristics as the original. But with the support from that extra lug, you have the ultimate wingman when you're roaring hard into flat corners.
Lastly, I took the lug height from the Shorty. The lugs are well supported, consequently the raised tread can bite well into forest floor and dry, dusty soils."

Tubeless tires have many advantages: You can ride with less air pressure. As a result, you get better traction and rolling resistance goes down. And where there's no tube, the risk of punctures goes down too. Maxxis TR tires are better prepared for mounting with sealant than other "Tubeless Ready" tires. The bead of the TR tires is completely covered with a rubber layer, just like a real UST tubeless tire. This makes tubeless mounting on all rims with standard dimensions already successful with the first inflation and with little liquid. Also "normal" Maxxis MTB tires can be mounted tubeless with sealant like tires of other manufacturers, because the carcass fabrics are very dense. Officially approved for tubeless mounting and guaranteed by Maxxis are but only the new Maxxis TR models.
