A safe bike helmet is important, especially if you ride your bike through city traffic a lot. The sportier helmets for urban cyclists and touring riders are very similar in style and function. They have a streamlined shape, lots of vents and cover the head, temples and neck. These helmets are available in many colors, they come a little wider or a little taller, so every cyclist can find a helmet that looks good with them and fits perfectly.
Pure city bike helmets on the other hand tend to be plain and round shaped, they take their cue from business outfits and are therefore often grey, white of black.
Do I need a bike helmet in the city?
Yes, you do need! In fact, you should always wear a helmet on your bike. In the city, however, this is especially true. Because here you are surrounded by many other road users, even if you ride safely and attentively, there are enough others who do not! As a cyclist, you'll simply be overlooked very quickly in the city. And before you know it, you're involved in an accident and you're on the road - regardless of whether you were the one who caused the accident or the victim.
Do I need a helmet on a trekking bike?
An emphatic yes! But the danger in bike trekking lurks elsewhere! When trekking or on bike tours you are on the road for a long time. At some point, your attention wanes, and then it happens...you fall on your nose. If you like to go trekking in remote areas, you will often end up on more or less well-maintained dirt and forest tracks. Bumpy surfaces are prone to falls, so make sure you wear a good helmet. If you do your bike touring on a gravel bike, however, you may find that a road bike helmet fits more comfortably.
Bicycle helmets on an e-bike
Whether you're riding a city e-bike or a trekking e-bike, you should definitely wear an appropriate helmet. There are numerous helmets specifically for use on e-bikes, which are adapted to the higher speeds of e-bikers. They are especially well padded and enclose your head extensively, and they often come with a visor, so that mosquitoes do not spoil your view. How to find a bike helmet in the right size
Once you've measured your head circumference, you can start looking for a bike helmet straight away. You can filter the helmets on BMO by size, then you can see at a glance which helmets we have for you to choose from. Most of them don't have a fixed size, they are suitable for a range of a few centimetres. You can then adjust them to the right size with a dial. This is especially handy if you want to cycle all year round. That way, in winter, you can adjust the helmet wider and wear a cap or headband underneath.

Bike helmets with lights, MIPS, and smart helmets
- Many bike helmets today have a MIPS layer that movably connects the two outer shells of the helmet. In the event of an impact, the forces acting on the helmet can thus be distributed over a larger area, and punctual injuries to the head or brain are avoided.
- Many helmets for recreational cyclists and commuters today bring a separate lighting. This provides additional safety especially in autumn and winter.
- More and more manufacturers are bringing smart helmets to the market. Here, from an emergency call and phone function to music streaming, there are many features that enrich cycling.
Tested city bike helmets and trekking helmets for men and women
Among the city helmets and touring helmets there is quite a lot to choose from, you will also find quite a few bike helmets specifically for women or men. The helmets are also available in numerous fits and colors, so there is a helmet for every taste and style. But again, unisex models are becoming more popular, ultimately a good fit is more important than a tag that says "women's helmet" or "men's helmet". Most bicycle helmets for children are also designed like city helmets, but you can usually buy them in many bright colors and with fun prints. When buying a helmet, look for the EN 1078 test standard, which shows that the helmet has passed all safety tests. For e-bikes, the EU standard NTA 8776 is a different standard.
If you then cover up with cycling gloves and a cycling jacket, you can get on your bike with peace of mind.
